How the Time Bank Works:
- The data and the Time and Talents software for Missoula Time Bank is hosted by hOurword.org. When you become a member and when you exchange hours as a member, you will be on the Missoula Time Bank part of the hOurworld website. Time bank members record their transactions here in hour and quarter hour increments.
- The Missoula Time Bank is a time based economy that works in parallel with the dollar economy. In the time bank, time can only be exchanged for time. There is never any equivalency between hours and dollars in the time bank, as this could make time hours taxable.
- Supplies and materials used in a service are either provided by the receiver, or the receiver will reimburse the provider with dollars. For example: If you hire a cook for two time bank hours to bake a special healthy cake, you will need to go to the store and buy the ingredients with your dollars, or give the cook dollars to buy or restock the ingredients he used.
- The Missoula Time Bank is managed by volunteers as much as possible and/or by members who are partially reimbursed with time bank hours. There are other operating expenses that can only be paid for with dollars. We are therefore asking new individual members to donate $25. If a monetary donation is difficult, three time bank hours (two hours for high school students) is a suggested donation. A time donation does not imply an equivalency between time bank hours and dollars. After the first year as member of the Missoula Time Bank, individual members will be asked to annually donate $25 and two time bank hours (the two hours will be automatically transfered) or donate four hours to the timebank. If we find that we can operate on a smaller budget or have more donations and volunteers, we will pass these savings on to our members.
- In addition to individual membership, businesses, and nonprofit organizations are welcome to join the Missoula Time Bank. For more information on how business and organizations can become time bank members, please click here.
